comX: how to implement it to work with a "small" microcontroller without a running OS?

Hi guys,

I am new here, and I am fairly new to Profinet and I am new to hilscher products. Basically you could say, that I am a newbie with everything concerning industrial ethernet.

I hope this is the right subcategory of the forum - if not, please move.

So what I wanna do is:

Hook up a host-µC to a Profinet I/O Environment using the comX Modul.I already bought this modul and it is lying in front of my right now.

This is what I can assume how it works (to start with) from reading some of the documentations:

I have to connect the comX to the µC with this fine-pitch samtec connector. I also have to ensure, that I have a connection to the UART of the comX, so that I can configure it with SYCON (via the serial port of my PC). Is that correct so far?

What I don't understand is the use of the driver (toolkit) on the embedded system and if I have to use that.

I am using a TI Stellaris Cortex M3 and I don't wanna use any OS on it, because I don't have experience with that. So I assume, that I can't load any drivers there. How can I get it to work anyway? Or is it not possible to use the comX without an OS running on the host (which is in my case my TI µC)?

Thanks for any help

Hello And Bera,

first of all, yes you need to connect the comX module via the fine-ptch connector to your HOST.

A good starting point for you will be the C-Toolkit. Please have a look into the cifX netX Toolkit - DPM manual into chapter 2  How to port the cifX Toolkit.

Thanks Andreas,

I was reading that the last hours. So it is possible using the toolkit's low-level hardware access functions. I think I have to ask further questions in the toolkit section.

Thank you!
